Resolved Question: Do you think some societies or nationalities are more receptive to Atheism than others?

I'm currently writing a paper on Soviet antireligious policies for a history course, and it seems that throughout the 1800s there was this culture of religious laxity or questioning of Orthodox Church doctrine, which nice of helps make sense how the Soviets could carry out their secularization steer so effectively. So I'm thinking that perhaps Russians were historically more open to the idea that there could be no god, or that at least church and state should be separate... I'm an ethnic Bengali, and in my place of birth (Bangladesh) it's sort of similar...a lot of people are solidly secularists, even if there are many religious people too. And do you think us Americans are also increasingly receptive to atheistic thought?

Resolved Question: Will Mohammad Ashraful become the next Aravinda De Silva?

I like to make rash calls. Mohammad Ashraful is going to become the new Aravinda de Silva. It’s difficult on Ashraful to be compared with some one we every watched for the best part of 20 years. But it’s the situation he finds himself in that reminds me of what Aravinda went through. Aravinda was born into a team that played its first test a year before he started, a country that was cricket mad, based in the sub continent. He was the team’s number one batsmen, even before he was ready to be so. He was a leader at a young age. A lot was expected of him. He even had to learn how to bowl. He's really short. quick-forward 18 years, stay on the same continent but leave the island of Sri Lanka and head to the main land for Bangladesh. There we have Ashraful, who started playing for the tigers in 2001, the tigers started in 2000. He has been dropped a few times, because so much is expected of him. A yearish ago, he was named captain at the age of 23. Oh and he bowls, leg spin (first major difference). He is also quite short. Over the next few years, if Bangladesh are ever to become real players in the cricket world, and I’d like to think they are, another side who can beat South Africa is always nice, they need Ashraful to stand up and become their Aravinda. There is even more proof that Ashraful is ready to step up and carry his team, he recently made 263 in first class cricket in Bangladesh. Now I’m sure I could make 100 in Bangladesh cricket, I mean Jason Gillespie made 200. What is important is the fact he is already learning how to make big scores. Making big scores anywhere means concentration and discipline the two qualities that have been missing in him. The dude is on his way. I think by the end of his test career, a career where I think he could play over 200 tests, he will average close to if not over 50 in tests. Regardless, in modern cricket, sides win respect in World Cups. Every one is watching, it can be gained over night and it’s easier than a test series. So I’m saying pencil in the next world cup for Ashraful de Silva. The new little champion. I meant he has made 263 in first class cricket. It wasn't recently, it was a year ago. I'm not saying he's going to be the next Aravinda, i'm saying he will be a lot like him. The 50 batting average is overdoing it a bit. Having support would help him. Aravinda never had much help at the start of his career and it's what made him so great. I agree Ben. They need a few good scores. If Bangladesh become confident they can win matches, the wins will start to arrive eventually. De Silva was a deadset legend. Is it even remotely possible that he could turn Bangladesh into a good team, like De Silva did with Sri Lanka.

Resolved Question: Is England the only team that would have Tim Ambrose?

Tim Ambrose. Tiny Tim Ambrose. I'm quite sure that he's a great guy in real life and every that. I'm also quite sure that he's arrive through a lot of adversity in order to play professional cricket, as he must have been below great pressure to focus his energies on a career as a rowing cox or a jockey. But would he receive a Test anywhere else in the world? Let's take a cursory look, without really assessing any evidence, and look whether Tim would elbow out any of the current wicketkeepers in world cricket. AUSTRALIA: Current keeper is Brad Haddin. Tim can only DREAM. He wouldn't be good enough to be in the top ten Australian keepers. Ronchi, Crosthwaite, Paine, Hartley, Manou, Smith, Clingeleffer, Anderson and Wade every beat him. NEW ZEALAND: Current keeper is Brendan McCullum. Also hanging around is Gareth Hopkins. Tim looks a bit like Gareth Hopkins, but that's the closest he's getting. If Prince Brendan was English, he'd be bigger than Freddie. PAKISTAN: Kamran Akmal. There was a time last year that I thought he was going to be dropped, but he dug in against India and is still around. Tim might beat him in looks, but he can't compete INDIA: Current keeper is MS Dhoni, but Dinesh Karthik is also around for whenever Dhoni doesn't feel like it. Again, total dreamland for Tim. Karthik beats him with the bat and Dhoni beats him with the hair. SRI LANKA: Prasanna Jayawardene is the Test specialist, another rather suave guy who's kept a bit who's not a bad batsman either. I happen to like Prasanna Jayawardene so there's no way I'd pick Ambrose over him. SOUTH AFRICA: Mark Boucher. Once again, Tim can only dream. WEST INDIES: Denesh Ramdin. He ain't no Jeff Dujon, and is properly babyfaced so that I can't imagine a dirty sledge coming out of his mouth, but is thought of as having "promise" and "potential". They might want him. BANGLADESH: Mushfiqur Rahim. Now, this is where things might receive interesting for Tim, but I really like this kid. He's even teeny tinier than Ambrose (yes, such a thing is possible, yes, he must indeed be the size of an ant), and he's not yet twenty. I'm not convinced, though, that Tim would edge him out of a team. Mushfiq's top test score is 80, against Sri Lanka, digging in with Ashraful, but he's put in a couple of memorable one day performances, notably against India in the world cup. ZIMBABWE: Pushing his luck there. I'd pick Taibu or Taylor over him anyday.

Open Question: Indians ~ Is This What Gandhi's Policies At Independence Have Achieved?

India is a country which was born out of a partition that took place so that the the muslims of the sub continent could have their possess country. The reason that pakistan and bangladesh was created was so that muslims and hindus could both live in peace. Had partition been undertaken correctly and had india been made a muslim free state, it would have been one of the most happiest and peaceful countries in the world today. Instead the bitter reality is that India, as a consequence of allowing islam to carry on existing in india in 1947, is today officially the most bombed country after Iraq. Is this what Gandhinian and Nehruvian secularism has given to Bharat??? India was made for every non-Muslims (Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Christians, Jews) and Pakistan and Bangladesh was made for Muslims. every Muslims were supposed to leave India in 1947 and instead they chose to stay to make life misreable for Indians.

Open Question: Why is even Turkey radicalizing?

I'm not Turkish. I'm Egyptian. I have, however, always been proud of Turkey. I admire Kemal Mustafa and how his secular reforms made his Republic the most modern country in the Muslim world. This no longer seems to be the case. Turkey now has a president who once met with terrorists. Since the AKP took power, taxes on alcohol have increased dramatically and women's role in the government has shrunk. The Turks I meet seem to be more for political Islam than Ataturk. Some even hate him. It's always the same: the more religious the Turk, the more likely. They call him a German Jew and a traitor who destroyed the Caliphate. They infuriate me. During the cartoon controversy priests were shot dead in Turkey, and the terror attacks in Istanbul have never been expected before. What's going on? I can't understand why people think a religious government is better. Look at Gaza after the Hamas election win--Iran after the 1979 revolution--Iraq after the fall of secularist Saddam Hussein--Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Algeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, even my possess Egypt. My great-grandfather was a Turk. He settled in Egypt and had a family. I've always been proud to be even one eighth Turkish. But now... As Turkey progresses, its model should be France or Italy, not Egypt or Saudi Arabia. Why don't Turks look that anymore? Oh, I got banned from a Turkish chat room for criticizing the government and now I'm wondering how long this question will last. :-D

Open Question: Should Bangladesh be stripped of Test status ?

The Bangladeshis won their one and only test match against Zimbabwe and since then they have been whipping boys for the other test playing nations . They can't even draw a test match . They are simply pathetic and are diluting the competition in Test cricket . I can understand their involvement in limited overs cricket because they atleast have a chance of winning them but Test cricket cannot be won by a fluke . So this is not good for competition they should be stripped from Test status . What are your views ?

Past or current players accepted. I got thinking about this after I remembered that Jamie Siddons is the Bangladesh coach. He scored 11,587 first class runs at 44.91 with 35 centuries and never played a test. Padman: Richards played 4 tests in 1970 against Bill Lawry's Aussies, in a series that South Africa won 4-0. Good potential. Over 200!!! And butterfingers Boucher costs Morkel a '5 for' by dropping his second dolly of the day.

Open Question: Please - a request Ya! Answerers?

Hi, Why do you people battle like this on Ya! Answers. I hv been observing these nice of fights since Mumbai blasts occured. We have to receive United, We have to be Stong to battle with terrorism, to make this world worth living for us and our kids. Don't muslims, hindus of pakistan, india, bangladesh, have kids. Eh! doesn't one like to look kites flying in the sky instead of buzzing fighter planes, doesn't both countries adore cricket - then why do you people blame eachother for this... We are every one, there was an article in times of india and I wish same kinds of articles are being published in newspapers accross the borders too, yes I am an Indian and far more than that a human being. The article told a story, which teaches a lot to us: In the beginning every the animals were same, they had same skin color, sma body structures, just the difference was in their health, some ate more so they were fat some ate less so they were tiny - it depednds on one's diet. Whenever they communicated with eachother they were confused. So they decided to color themselver in different colors, forms etc. Zebra, tiger took stripes, elephant was lazy so he spilled gray on himself, peacock chose best colors but forgot to have good vocal chords.... Then there was a battle ove their forms, monkeys teased tigers for their stripes and many such fights took place. So the old owl came and explained them that they were every same before they they took different different colors, forms to help themselves gain some identity, to help themselves make this world colorful and worth living to have curiosity and pleasure in meeting with eachother... Islam is not so weak to change itself in diferent countries in different forms - It is one which is strong, with a base, in what Mohammad Sahib has explained in the Holy Koran. There are not less muslims in India or Pakistan or any other country in this world who follow Koran and live a life of a true muslim... But the problem is something else. Some people who mis interpret Koran and make others believe in their mis interpretations. They came and explode bomb's.I agree that there were Indian muslims too supporting the Pakistani militants. In this way no-one is pure. And everyone is pure except some people who are common in both the countries. Even in Malegaon blasts, many Hindu leaders were caught, so neither they are pure. I am a Hindu but I don't support VHP, RSS, Bajrang Dal. Even if they weren't proved convict in the blasts, they have already done so much hurt to the country.... They are supposed to be banned and at the same time SIMI, IM, DM ETC.. are to be knocked out. Not even in this question, in every question's I have seen on Ya! i have seen such people who are corrupting this common platform, leading a way to virtual riots. But they are anly some and we have to be united and constantly oppose such posts... Thanks for reading this. I wish you will spread this message on yahoo answers.... Answer to Adam C ( the first Answerer): I am not imposing my thoughts over you. I am saying a general view. And I am not at the time saying you to blame a community or a country, I want to say due to some monsters in the Utopia you cannot blame whole community.... If you didn't got it still you are the one I point in this question... Answer to Nehal: Look you are correct in saying so untill unless you include me or others who want to help the reforms, I am preparing for IAS and at the same time quite interested in politics... Nehal, it's time to be positive and unite, the one who considers these old ideas must remember that the basics are same, and it's silly if you call them old and boring..

Open Question: Please - A request to all Ya!

Thanks for your positive response. And if you think that the virtual terrorists on this platform will thrive you are wrong, post them comments, ignore such questions which bring up these riots and answer them in such a way to change their minds or make them feel shame( this one is good for those who give answers for enjoyment and points - you guys just kick them out of here....) Thanks again.

Open Question: Abdur Razzak illegal bowling action, what about the others?

Hi, i heard today that abdur razzak (bangladesh) has been banned from every cricket due to an illegal bowling action. I think they should do random checks on every bowler as if they test a bowler like they did with murali, he can just bowl floaters during the test, making sure he does not bend his arm to much. Kirtley (sussex), Murali (sri lanka) and now razzak have every been questioned but only razzak banned. I dont think this is fair. Quite often i look many international bowlers 'toss' the ball and the commentators also point it out. It is silly organising a test as they will fake it. Not taking anything away from murali though, legendary bowler. I wish they do introduce random checks of footage rather than organising a test. thats ridiculous 'dels replies'. i think he is a quality bowler still.
